Manipulation checks Flashcards
What is a manipulation check?
a test of what a stimuli is, not what it does
What is construct validity?
Construct validity is about how well a test measures the concept it was designed to evaluate
What is face validity?
- the extent to which a test appears to measure what it claims to measure based on face value.
- it’s the least sophisticated measure of validity and does not require any statistical analysis
What is a manipulation check?
- used to assess the effectiveness of a manipulation on the participants.
- verifies whether the manipulated IV has successfully influenced the experimental conditions and elicited the desired change.
What is a pilot study?
test run of experiment where manipulation is checked without interfering with experiment
What is the purpose of manipulation checks in survey experiments?
- important because subjects often take surveys away from researchers
- can work as attention checks in surveys
What is a nomological network?
a representation of the concepts of interest in a study, their observable manifestations, and the relationships between them
What are mediators?
Psychological states that link the cause (manipulation) to the effect (outcome)
What are moderators?
explain conditions of interaction between a third variable of the IV that influences DV
What is Ad hoc creation?
most manipulations were created on the fly for specific studies without prior validation
