A cone-shaped fracture that is made by applying force at a certain angle (unnatural, shows human activity).
Absolute dating
Assign an actual date to an item.
Relative dating
We know A is older than B, but we don’t know how old either are.
Radiocarbon
Can provide accurate age estimates.
Half-life
C14 decays at a constant pace, this is the half-life of the isotope.
Phase
A classification system. Creates chronological sequence for cultures.
Band
Pop. >1 000.
Minimal material culture.
Temporary structures.
Hunter-gatherers.
Tribe
Pop. Up to a few thousand.
Permanent huts, shrines.
More elaborate material culture.
Chiefdom
Pop. ~5 000 - 20 000 thousand.
Lots of elaborate material culture.
Large scale architecture.
Early State, or, State Level Society
Pop. 20 000 or more.
There are palaces, temples, public buildings.
Elaborate material culture, there are full-time craft specialists.
Economic organization
How people work and why.
Social organization
Leadership (if any), and jobs that people have.
Repeated occupation
Can result in the movement of items, and can transform deposits.
Intentional remodelling
Many sites were changed over the years, easier to see with architecture, but can still be seen in hunter-gatherer.
Context
Finding artifacts in certain areas can change the meaning. We can classify items, but not know their use. Items get damaged, stolen, altered, destroyed.
Systemic context
The use (of an artifact).
Abandonment
Group leaving a site behind.
C-transforms
Changes brought by the cultural world (humans).
N-transforms
Natural transformations.
Formation processes
C-transforms and N-transforms.
Association
The relationship between items and where they’re found.
