Module One, Lecture Two Flashcards
Terminology (20 cards)
What is the Definition of Homeostasis?
The body maintains a stable internal environment, or balance, in response to external conditions
Describe the process of Maintaining Homeostasis…
When a controlled variable moves too far from the set point, responses from the body attempt to move the variable back to normal ( e.g. Shivering to create warmth )
Describe the Anatomical Position…
Body is standing upright, facing forward, with arms at the sides, palms facing forward, feet flat on the floor also facing forward
Define Anterior….
The front or direction toward the front of the body
Define Posterior…
The back or direction toward the back of the body
Define Superior…
A position above or higher than another part of the body
Define Inferior…
A position below or lower than another part of the body
Define Medial…
The middle or direction toward the middle of the body
Define Lateral…
The side or direction toward the side of the body
Define Proximal…
A position in a limb that is nearer the point of attachment or trunk of the body
Define Distal…
A position in a limb that is farther from the point of attachment or the trunk of the body
Define Deep…
A position farther from the surface of the body
Define Superficial…
A position closer to the surface of the body
What are the Divisions of the Body? ( 3 )
- Coronal
- Sagital
3.Transverse
What are the movements demonstrated in the Coronal Plane? ( 6 )
- Abduction
- Adduction
- Elevation
- Depression
- Inversion
- Eversion
Describe the Coronal Plane… ( Bread Loaf )
Frontal Plane which separates the front ( anterior ) and back ( posterior ) of the body. Movements that occur are lateral ( side-to-side )
Describe the Sagittal Plane… ( Hotdog Bun )
Longitudinal place, divides the body into left and right halves. Movements that occur are forward and backwards
What are the movements demonstrated in the Sagittal Plane? ( 4 )
- Flexion ( Decrease angle at joint )
- Extension ( Increase angle at joint )
- Dorsiflexion
- Plantar Flexion
Describe the Transverse Plane… ( Bagel )
Axial pane, divides the body into upper ( superior ) and lower ( inferior ) halves. Movements that occur involve rotation or horizontal movement
What are the movements demonstrated in the Transverse Plane? ( 3 )
- Rotation ( Limb moves around its vertical axis )
- Horizontal Abduction ( moving away from midline, 90-degree angle in front of you )
- Horizontal Adduction ( moving toward the midline, 90-degree angle to the side )
