Module Three, Lecture Twenty Six Flashcards
The Hypothalamus, Pituitary and Growth Hormone (11 cards)
What glands and organs are unique to the Endocrine System? ( 8 )
- Hypothalamus
- Pituitary Gland
- Thyroid
- Parathyroid
- Adrenal Glands
- Pancreas
- Testes
- Ovaries
What is the main function of the Endocrine System?
Responsible for creating and releasing hormones to maintain body functions. Hormones deliver their messages by locking into the cells they target so they can relay the message
What are Hormones?
Chemicals that coordinate different functions in your body by carrying messages through your blood to your organs, skin, muscle and other tissues
What are the three types of tissues the Endocrine System consists of? ( 3 )
- Endocrine Glands
- Organs
- Endocrine Related Tissues
What is the Hypothalamus?
A control centre for maintaining the body’s internal balance, or homeostasis , by regulating various functions e.g. body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, and blood pressure
What are some functions of the Pituitary Gland? ( 8 )
- Growth
- Metabolism
- Reproduction
- Stress Response
- Lactation
- Water and Salt Balance
- Labor and Childbirth
- Control of other Glands
What is the main function of the Thyroid?
Produces hormones that regulate metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure
What is the main function of the Parathyroid Gland?
Regulate Calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood
What is the main function of the Adrenal Glands?
Produce hormones that regulate stress response, blood pressure, metabolism, and the immune system
What is the main function of the Pancreas?
Aids in digestion and regulating blood sugar levels
What is the Human Growth Hormone ( HGH )?
