Motor and Reflex Function Flashcards
(13 cards)
Myotatic reflex
The muscle stretch reflex where the receptive neuron has direct connection to the muscle spindle and with CNS neurons that send axons back to muscle. The basis for DTRs
Hoffmann’s sign
tingling sensation triggered by mechanical stimulus in the distal portion of an injured nerve (AKA tinels sign)
Clonus
Repetitive usually rhythmic reflex response elicited by stretching a tendon manually. It is an indication of hyperactive reflexes
Athetosis
A slow writhing snakelike movement of body or body parts.
hemiballisum
A flinging motion of one side of the body, can result in falls.
usually reflective of basal gannglia disease with chorea and athetosis.

DTRs \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ wit damage to descending motor pathways. Superficial reflexes (abdominal, cremasteric, plantar, anal wink) \_\_\_\_\_ with damage to descending motor pathways.

What will the effect of damage to the cerebellum or basal ganglia be on DTRs?
typically no change.
Upper Motor neuron path:
Gray matter internal capsule cerebral peduncle pyramidal decussation descends cord synapse with LMN at level or nerve root.
