Flashcards in MSK Radiology Deck (18):
1

Associated with Codman's triangles (periosteal lifting), sunburst appearance

Osteosarcoma

2

Benefits of
X-ray
CT
MRI

X-ray: cheap, fast
CT: faster than MRI, more res than X-ray
MRI: soft tissue

3

Characteristic non-uniform joint space narrowing

Osteoarthritis
(on weight-bearing portions)

4

Characteristic uniform joint space narrowing

Rheumatoid arthritis

5

Locations of Osteoarthritis

hip, knee, IP joints, first MCP joint, scapho-trapezoid-trapezium

6

Locations of Rheumatoid Arthritis

hands, shoulders, hips, knees --> usually symmetric, bilateral

7

Features of Osteoarthritis

Subchondral cysts, subchondral sclerosis, osteophytes, space narrowing

8

Imaging must-haves

two orthogonal views
one joint above, one joint below

9

Suspect Child Abuse if...

metaphyseal corner/bucket handle fractures, periosteal hemorrhage, periosteal elevation

10

Osteomyelitis on radiography

Destruction of bone at infection site!

Also:
Periosteal reaction
Soft tissue swelling
+/- Sub-cutaneous air

11

Brodie's abscess

Chronic sub-acute abscess of bone, surrounded by dense fibrous tissue + sclerotic bone

12

What contibutes to the uniform space narrowing in RA?

Synnovitis --> all over inflammation

13

Transverse fracture

at a right angle to the long axis of the bone

14

Oblique fracture

in oblique direction to the long axis of the bone confined to one plane

15

Spiral fracture

in oblique direction to the long axis of the bone in multiple planes

16

Repetitive acceleration/deceleration in peds may cause

Bucket-handle fractures

17

Common sites of pediatric suspicious fractures are

femur, elbow, shoulder, ribs, skull, finger

18

If patient 40y +
Lytic tumor
Proximal to elbows/knees (central skeleton) -->

Either metastases or osteomyeloma
