1

what is a ionic compound

a metal bonded with a nonmetal

2

what happens to anions when naming ionic compounds?

their endings change to "ide" (nitride, fluoride, oxide etc.)

3

how do you name ionic compounds

1. find and write cation
2. find and write anion
3. change anion ending to "-ide"

4

how do you name ionic formulae

1. list cation first, anion second.
2. write charge on top and balance.
3. reduce to lowest terms

5

how to name with the OUS/IC naming system

1. name the cation with the ous/ic ending
2. name anion with ide ending

6

when do you use the ous ending

in ionic bonds where the cation has the lower charge

7

when do you use the ic ending

in ionic bonds where the cation has the higher charge

8

how do you name covalent compounds

1. count the number of atoms
2. place the apropriate prefix in front of cation and anion
3.change anion suffix to "-ide"
**do not use "mono" for cations**

9

what are the prefixes (up to 10)

mono = 1
di = 2
tri = 3
tetra = 4
penta = 5
hexa = 6
hepta = 7
octa = 8
nona = 9
deca = 10

10

which are the 8 main oxyacids?

acetic, carbonic, nitric, sulferic, phosphoric, chloric, bromic, iodic.

11

what is the polyatomic formula for ACETATE

CH(3)COO *brackets = subscripts

12

what is the polyatomic formula for CARBONATE

CO-2(3) *brackets = subscripts

13

what is the polyatomic formula for NITRATE

NO-(3) *brackets = subscripts

14

what is the polyatomic formula for SULFATE

SO-2(4) *brackets = subscripts

15

what is the polyatomic formula for PHOSPHATE

PO-3(4) *brackets = subscripts

16

what is the polyatomic formula for CHLORATE

ClO-(3) *brackets = subscripts

17

what is the polyatomic formula for BROMATE

BrO-(3) *brackets = subscripts
