Q

What Diseases result due to Asbestos exposure?

A

Lung Cancer
-Malignant Mesothelioma: Tumor in the chest and ABD cavity
Mesothelioma: Rarely found except in those exposed to asbestos typically 10-45yrs later.

Asbestos exposure plus smoking increases risk of lung cancer, duh.

Asbestosis: Fibrosis of the lung, worsening disease of the lung, disabling and even fatal occupational disease.

16
Q

(EART) Safety Officer

A
  1. Inspect each repair operations involving friable asbestos
  2. Ensure the ship has required equipment to accomplish asbestos repair
  3. Approve access to the area where asbestos removal or repair ops are complete.
17
Q

(EART) Engineering/Repair Department Head

A
  1. Provide the necessary equipment and protective clothing to asbestos workers
  2. Identify and provide lists of personnel involved in asbestos ops to the Medical Dept. for entry into the AMSP
  3. Ensure all asbestos containing materials are collected, stowed, and disposed.
18
Q

(EART) Division Officer

A
  1. Attend the asbestos pre-work brief if required.
19
Q

(EART) Medical Department Representative

A

Implements Asbestos Medical Surveillance Program

20
Q

What is the Asbestos Identification Process?

A

The Industrial Hygeine Dept. must identify any hazard associated with asbestos and provide recommended actions to the ship to elimate or minimize the hazard.

21
Q

How does lab ID the Asbestos?

A
  1. Polarized Light Microscopy
  2. Transfer Electron Microscopy
22
Q

LIST the basic methods of controlling asbestos hazards in the workplace.

A
  1. Basic Principles: Substitute with less hazardout materials approved by NAVSEASYSCOM; removed by a shore facility
  2. Engineering Controls: Isolation and Ventilation
  3. Admin Controls: Ship prohibits admin controls to keep exposure low.
  4. PPE
23
Q

What is the Full PPE required for asbestos?

A

-Full body, one piece disposable coveralls with hood (TYVEK)
-Medium weight rubber gloves, w/ thin “under glove”
-Slip resisitant plastic shoe covers OR heavy polyethylene shoe covers w/ slip resistant soles
- Safety glasses OR vented goggles
- Respiratory Protection

24
Q

What is the purpose of the AMSP and how do you get on the list?

A

It is designed to identify SS of asbestos related medical conditions.
Placement into the AMSP is based on past hx and/or current exposure or potential exposure to asbestos.

25
Q

What are the training requirements for Asbestos Workers?

A

EART personnel:
-Emergency Asbestos Response Team (A-760-2166)
-2 Day formal course
- Navy Occupational Safety & Health Environmental Training Center

Respirator fit-testing, selection and maintenance:
-Conducted by Respiratory protection manager
-Informal training

26
Q

What are the exposure limits of asbestos?

A

Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL): 0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc) of air, calculated as 8 hour time-weighted average (TWA) exposure

Excursion Limit (EL): 1.0 f/cc averaged over 30 min sampling period.

27
Q

What are the notification requirements of asbestos exposure?

A

Physicians Written Opinion
-Completed for each individual for current or anticipated exposure

28
Q

What does the Physicians Written Opinion Include?

A

-Medical conditions that would place the employee at an increased risk
- Any recommendations of limitations
-Statement employee was informed of the exam results
-Statement employee was informed of increased risk of lung cancer

29
Q

What is the Distribution of the Physicians Written Opinion?

A
  1. Signed copy to the emplyees HREC
  2. Copy employee and employee’s command w/in 30 days
  3. SHALL NOT include any findings or dx unrelated to asbestos
30
Q

How does someone get off the AMSP List?

A

Documentation on a SF600

31
Q

How are the AMSP HREC’s retained

A

All shipboard asbestos records shall be trasnferred to the supporting shore medical activity for permanent retention following transfer, discharge, or retirement of individual.

32
Q

When will the Supporting shore medical facility establish a file for each ship?

A
  1. If the ship changes Homeport, the files will be forwarded to the new supporting shore medical activity.
  2. Upon decommissioning, the supporting shore medical activity will forward the record to BUMED.
33
Q

How do you mark an asbestos HREC?

A
