Nervous System Flashcards
Discuss the structure and function of the nervous system (12 cards)
What is the nervous system made out of?
- Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What is the Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
Describe the function of the Brain & Spinal Cord within the CNS
Brain: Receives & processes sensory information
Spinal Cord: Conducts signals to and from the brain & controls reflex activities
What is the simple way to remember CNS?
CNS = BRAIN + SPINAL CORD
What is the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)?
PNS: All nervous tissue outside CNS + ENS (Enteric)
What is the two primary components of the PNS?
- Motor Neurons
- Sensory Neurons
What is the two parts of the Motor Neurons?
- Somatic Nervous System: Responsible for voluntary movements and sensory perception
- Autonomic Nervous System: Regulates involuntary bodily functions
What is the Autonomic Nervous System made out of? (ANS)
- Sympathetic: ‘FIGHT OR FLIGHT’
(SHOOT)
- Parasympathetic:
‘REST AND DIGEST’
(POINT)
Define Sympathetic & Parasympathetic
Sympathetic: Preparing the body for action in times of stress or danger
Parasympathetic:
Facilitating activities like digestion and relaxation
What is the function of the PNS?
- Delivers sensory information to the CNS
- Carries motor commands to peripheral tissues
What is the role of the PNS?
The PNS relays these motor commands from the CNS to peripheral tissues.
Give me 2 examples of the role of PNS!
- If you decide to raise your hand, the CNS sends a command through the PNS to the arm muscles, telling them to contract.
- If your body needs to digest food, the CNS sends a command via the autonomic division of the PNS to the stomach and intestines to activate digestion processes.
