Flashcards in Nervous system Deck (19):
1

Cerebellum

Is in charge of coordination and balance

2

Medulla Oblongata

Is the control center for involuntary activities such as breathing

3

Hypothalamus

Regulates temperature, hunger and thirst

4

Amygdala

The portion of our brain that controls impulsive emotions and anger

5

Cerebrum

Split into 2 hemsperes that connect to each other in the middle via the corpus callosum
Each half is divided into four lobes

6

Four Lobes of the Brain

Frontal, Parietal, Occipital and Temporal Lobe

7

Frontal Lobe

Main functions are speech, motor cortex

8

Parietal Lobe

Main functions are speech, taste, reading, somatosensory

9

Occipital Lobe

Main function is vision

10

Temporal Lobe

Main functions are hearing and smell

11

Parasympathetic Nervous system

Branch of the nervous system that shuts the body down to conserve energy
Slower heart rate, decreased blood pressure, bronchial muscle constriction, and urniary bladder constrictino

12

Sympathetic Nervous system

In reversed role to parasympathetic nervous system

13

Autonomic Nervous system

Controls the involuntary activities of the body- smooth muscle contraction, cardiac muscle contractions, glands

14

Motor Division of the PNS

Carries information away from the central nervous system

15

Sensory Division fo the PNS

Carries information to the central nervous system

16

PNS

Peripheral nervous system, which can be broken into a motor and sensory division

17

CNS

Central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal cord
Controls the skeletal muscles and voluntary movement

18

Four Major Thermoregulatory Processes

Conduction, Convection, Evaporation, and Radiation

19

Conduction

Process by which heat moves from a place of higher temperature to a place of lower temperature
