23
Q

Hot Work (NFPA)

A

any activity involving;

riveting, welding, burning, use of powder actuating tools, or similar fire producing operations, any operation that raises the temperature of the work piece to 400’F or higher.

***grinding, drilling, abrasive blasting, or similar operations in the presence of OR against accumulations of readily combustible materials or flammable or combustible liquids, gas, or vapors when the atmosphere exceeds 10% of LEL

24
Q

what is the requester responsible for?

A

maintaining safe conditions according to MC cert.

25
Q

what does secured mean?

A

means it’s closed in a way to prevent opening

26
Q

what is a tank vessel (nfpa)

A

any vessel that is constructed to carry bulk liquid cargo in tanks

27
Q

what does toxic mean?

A

a chemical can produce adverse health effects or injury if exposed.

28
Q

what is toxicity factors for exposure?

A

concentration, time, and route of exposure

29
Q

what does visual inspection consist of?

A

physical inspection of the space to identify atmospheric and fire hazards

30
Q

which vessels are required to have MC certificate?

A

Tank vessels, vessels other than tank vessels, military, vessels in lay up, vessels carrying flammable compressed gas

31
Q

under what conditions can a tank vessel enter a yard for repair?

A
  1. for examination, for scraping, washing and painting: when all cargo and cofferdams are kept closed.
  2. for cold work performed on prop., tailshaft, rudder or hot work performed off the vessel such as on anchor chains, provided cargo and cofferdams are kept closed.
  3. for work within boilers and machinery spaces and other locations, but MC cert is required for hot work. all compartments where atmosphere is over 10% lel shall be kept closed and secured and these shall be noted on certificate.
32
Q

what vessels shall be treated as tank vessels?

A

military tank barges and oilers

33
Q

what are the requirements for vessels (other than tank vessels) when it comes to hot work?

A

If the vessel has carried flammable or combustible liquid in bulk as fuel or cargo, or cargo that can produce hazardous atmospheres….

no hot work undertaken in or on external boundaries of cargo tanks, fuel tanks, oil pipelines, heating coils, or hollow structures, and machinery spaces unless inerted or cleaned to meet 7.1.4,7.1.6,7.1.8 and if entry required to meet 7.1.1.

34
Q
