(19 cards)
What are nutrients?
Biologically active substances made up of millions to atoms.
They disable in water, making chemical soup that our body can absorb
Give me examples of macronutrients:
Water
Carbohydrates
Lipids
Protiens
Nucleic acids
What does poly mean?
Many
What is Polysaccharides?
Three or more simple sugars forming - starch, fibre and animal glycogen
What is Oligosaccharides?
Mostly Disaccharides (DI = 2)
(sugars such as sucrose, lactose, & maltose)
What does mono mean?

Fat soluble
Name some sources of protein:
Milk
Eggs
Grains
Legumes
Vegetables
What are antibodies?
Part of our defence mechanism
What are Enzymes?
Varied functions, they speed up chemical reactions in your body
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers made by special organs ( glands) that travel through the blood to tell different body parts what to do
What are amino acids
The base unit of proteins
What 2 compounds do amino acids consist of?
Amino radical compound & organic acid
compound
What do amino acids contain?
at least one amino radical and one organic acid
What is the function of protein?
Sustains growth, maintenance and repair
Inside cells what is contained?
Water
Why is there extracellular fluid in the cells?
To allow transport and communication, it also allows lubrication, cooling and excretion
