Structure and Function of the Heart Flashcards
(28 cards)
The heart pumps blood into two separate systems what are they?
Pulmonary circulation and Systematic Circulation
What is the function of the pulmonary circulation?
To move deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs for gas exchange
What is the function of the systemic circulation?
To deliver oxygenated blood and nutrients from the heart to the body tissues and organs while collecting de-oxygenated blood and waste products for return to the heart and lungs
What is the right side of the hearts function?
Right side of heart pumps blood to the lungs where gas exchange occurs
What is the left side of the hearts function?
Pumps blood into the systemic circulation which supplies the rest of the body
What is the right side of the hearts function?
Pulmonary circulation (lungs)
What is the left side of the hearts function?
Systemic circulation (system)
What are the 4 chambers of the heart?
Right atrium
Left atrium
Right ventricle
Left ventricle
What are the three layers of the heart?
Fibrous pericardium layer
Pericardium space
Visceral Layer
What is Pericardium?
A fibrous sac that encloses the heart and great vessels - keeps heart in stable location
What is the fibrous pericardium layer?
Surrounds and anchors the heart in place
What is the Pericardium space?
Contains a lubricant which reduces friction as heart contracts and relaxes
What is the Visceral Layer?
Attached to heart surface
What is Myocardium?
Middle layer - hearts muscle acts as a pump
What is the endocardium?
Lines the chambers of the heart and forms valves - it receives the blood supply form the coronary arteries
What is the pericardium?
Outer layer
What is the function of the pericardium?
Protects the heart from infection - encloses it
Prevents heart from over expanding
Prevents friction
What is the function of a valve?
Ensures that blood moves only in one direction - forward
Why does blood flow through valves?
As a result of pressure changed
Where are valves situated?
Entrance and exit of ventricles
What is Sinotrial (SA) Node
Small mass of specialised cells in the wall of the right atrium
What is the function of the SA Node
Acts as a pacemaker of the heart - it generates an impulse which travels through the atria causing them to contract
What is an Atrioventricular (AV) Node
Its a small mass of neuromuscular tissue in the wall of the atrial septum near the AV valves.
What is the function of the AV Node?
It is responsible for transmitting the nerve impulse from atria to the ventricles - it can initiate impulses itself but at a slower rate than the SA node
