The Nervous System Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is CNS?
Central Nervous System
What is the CNS made up of?
Brain and spinal cords (body master control)
What is PNS?
Peripheral Nervous System
What consists of the PNS?
everything else ( the body link to the outside World)
Autonomic NS
Somatic NS
Sympathetic NS
Parasympathetic NS
What is the spinal cord?
A column of nerves between the brain and peripheral nervous system
What is the Brian stem?
Connects the brain to the spinal cord
What three major parts is the brain divided into?
The Hindbrain
The midbrain
The Forebrain
What is the function of the Autonomic NS?
Regulated involuntary bodily processes including: heart rate, respiration, digestion and pupil contraction.
What is the function of the Somatic NS?
Carries sensory information from the sensory organs to the CNS and relays motor (movements) commands to muscles, controls voluntary movements
What two NS can be broken down from the Autonomic NS?
Sympathetic NS and Parasympathetic NS
What is the function of the Sympathetic NS?
Prepares body for action and stress - this is called flight or flight
What is the function of the Parasympathetic NS?
Calms the body and helps the body to conserve energy
What is the assessment called to assess head injuries and brain functions?
PEARL
What does do you assess in PEARL assessment?
Pupil
Equal
And
React to
Light
What is the function of a Nucleus?
Serves both as the repository of genetic information and as the cell’s control centre, it also contains DNA.
What is the function of a Dendrite?
To receive information
What is the function of a Cell body?
To control all of the functions of the cell
What is the function of an Axon?
To carry electrical impulses that are the means of communication within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body
What is the function of a myelin sheath?
It allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
What is the function of a Node of Ranvier
To allow for ions to diffuse in and out of the neuron, propagating the electrical signal down the axon
What is the function of a Schwann Cell?
Is essential for the support and myelination of axons ensures fast and accurate communication between the central nervous system and the periphery
What is the function of an Axon Terminal
To transmit messages to other cells via use of neurotransmitters at synapses
The signals are sent what elements do they rely on?
Sodium and Potassium
What element can cause damage to sodium?
Water - if you drink too much
