What is Nitrate?
Inorganic compound made up of nitrogen and oxygen can be found in Beetroot.
Athletes take mostly in liquid form
0.5L of beetroot taken
2-3 hours pre event.
Do aerobic or anaerobic athletes take nitrate?
Mainly aerobic performing in hypoxic or high altitude conditions.
Benefits of Nitrate?
Increases Blood flow to muscles removing lactate
Delays fatigue
Increases aerobic capacity.
Drawbacks of Nitrate.
Maybe cause Headaches and dizziness
Long term health risks are unclear.
Recommend athletes to used dietary rather then supplements.
Description of caffeine?
Stimulant that quickly stimulates the brains nervous system
- Take 60 mins prior event
- In liquid or gum form.
Do Aerobic or Anaerobic athletes use Caffeine?
Mostly Anaerobic
-Power athletes or athletes who sprint repeatedly.
Benefits of caffeine?
Preserves glycogen stores
Stimulates increase breakdown in fats
Delays fatigue
Drawbacks of Caffeine?
Diuretic so can increase risk of dehydration
Increase urine production
High blood pressure
What is a bicarbonate?
Bicarbonate of soda/ an alkaline that removes acid
Do Aerobic or Anaerobic athletes use Bicarbonate?
Anaerobic
Speed endurance
Benefits of bicarbonate?
Neutralises acid/PH in blood
Increased removal of LA
Delays muscle fatigue
Drawbacks of Bicarbonate?
Can cause
- Nausea
- Bloating
- Diarrhoea.
