Q

How do you differentiate between a primary or secondary alcohol?

A

Add tollens’ reagent.
If aldehyde present a silver mirror will be produced. This shows the solution is a primary alcohol.

If a ketone is present the solution will remain the same. This shows the solution is a secondary alcohol.

Q

When is a high resolution mass spectrometer used?

A

Some organic molecules have the same Mr so using the mass spectrometer isn’t helpful. Therefore a high resolution mass spectrometer is used
