Outcome 3 - Surgical Procedures Flashcards
(16 cards)
The Role of the DA for Surgical Procedures
Preparation for a surgical procedure involves setting up the correct instruments, maintaining a sterile field in the operatory, and ensuring a personal level of preparedness and protection. the DA must demonstrate knowledge with various surgical procedures and provide verbal and written post op
Biological Indicator - for Surgery
A BI must be used with each load of surgical instruments if implantable devices (ex dental implants, bone grafting scres, bone plates) are being placed.
the instruments must not be used until the results of the BI test are known
must be tracked for date, load, and sterilizer used - this information must be recorded in the patient’s rcord at the time of placement
Disposal in Biohazard containers
Gauze which is heavily saturated with bood or removed tissue must be disposed of in properly identified biohazardous containers and transported for final disposal accoording to local municiapl regulations.
Role of the non-sterile dental assistant?
Circlating assistant / float
Role of the sterile assistant?
Assisting directly with the procedure
PPE for Surgery
Must wear sterile gloves whenever invasive surgical procedures are performed.
-must wear surgical mask (change when it becomes contaminated)
-must wear protective eyewear
-ppe must be removed prior to leaving patient care area
Whe must sterile gloves be worn?
Whenever intentional gingival, mucosal or dermal flaps are raised and
whenever the cutting or sectioning of bone is anticipated, and whenever a simple procedure becomes a surgical procedure (tooth breaking that requires surgical extraction)
Sterile Water
sterile water or sterile saline must be used for irrigation during surgery where there are open vascular sites or whenever bone is cut
Biopsy Specimen Handling
To prevent contamination of the specimen as well as
prevent contamination to the outside of the container,
biopsy specimens are placed in a container that is sturdy,
leak-proof, and designed to close securely. If the outside
of the container becomes contaminated, the container is
cleaned and disinfected.

-Promote healing
-Limit contamination of the surgical site
DAs Role with Sutures
They assist the dentist in the placement of sutures after surgery and, when healing is complete, remove the sutures under the supervision of the dentist. It is within the Scope of Practice in Province of Alberta to remove dental sutures.
What is a periodontal dressing/periopack?
They act as a bandage that is placed over the surgical site
What is a periopack/periodontal dressing used for
-hold the incision flaps in place after surgery
-to protect newly transplanted tissue
-to minimize post-surgery discomfort, bleeding or infection
-To protect surgical area from accidental trauma during eating and drinking
-to support mobile teeth during healing
2 Types of periodontal dressings available are..
-Zinc Oxide Eugenol
-Noneugenol Dressing
DA role for Periodontal Dressing
It is within the scope of practice in AB for a DA to place and remove periodontal dressing
