What are Sutures?
Sutures are the stitches placed to control bleeding and promote healing
Types of absorbable sutures
-Plain catgut - provides the fastest healing for mucous membranes and subcutaneous tissues
Chromic catgut - provides a much slower healing, allowing the internal tissues to heal first
Vicryl - is a synthetic absorbable material
Types of nonabsorbable sutures
Silk - used for its strength and ease of use
Polyester fiber - is one of the strongest sutures
Nylon - used for its strength and elasticity
Can RDAs place sutures?
NO! Suture placement is NOT within the scope of practice for RDA
Dental Sutures Technique Types
- Interrupted Suture
- Continuous suture
- Vertical/matress suture
- Horizontal/matress suture
- Continous box suture
Suture Removal
When nonabsorbable sutures are placed, the patient is scheduled to return to have them removed in approx 5-7 days
-clean area/suture with antiseptic/saline
using forceps, grip the not and pull away slightly/gently from tissues
-slide scissors under suture and snip
-guide not and suture away from tissues
-clean area/suture with antiseptic/saline
