Paper Chromatography - PRACTICAL Flashcards
Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table (12 cards)
What is one method of separating substances in a mixture?
Chromatography
Chromatography is a technique used to separate different components in a mixture.
What can chromatography be used to separate?
Different dyes in an ink
Chromatography can effectively separate various dyes present in ink.
What is the first step in the chromatography process?
Draw a line near the bottom of a sheet of filter paper
A pencil should be used as pencil marks are insoluble.
What should be used to add the ink to the filter paper?
A drop of the ink
The drop should be placed on the pencil line.
What should the sheet of filter paper be placed in?
A beaker of solvent
Common solvents include water or ethanol, depending on the compounds being tested.
What is important to ensure regarding the ink and solvent?
The ink isn’t touching the solvent
This prevents the ink from dissolving directly into the solvent.
What should be placed on top of the container during chromatography?
A lid
The lid prevents the solvent from evaporating.
What happens to the solvent during the chromatography process?
It soaks up the paper, carrying the ink with it
This movement helps in the separation of the dyes.
What occurs to each different dye in the ink during chromatography?
They move up the paper at different rates
This results in the separation of dyes, with each forming a distinct spot.
What happens if any dyes in the ink are insoluble in the solvent?
They’ll stay on the baseline
Insoluble dyes do not move with the solvent front.
What should be done when the solvent nearly reaches the top of the paper?
Take the paper out of the beaker and leave it to dry
This allows the chromatogram to form and be visible.
What is the end result of the chromatography process called?
A chromatogram
The chromatogram displays a pattern of spots corresponding to the different dyes.
