what is a phobia

a person with a phobia may panic to the presence of the stimulus
panic results in different behaviours such as crying, screaming or running away
How do children react to panic
freezing
clinging
tantrum

people with phobias will go through a lot of effort to avoid coming into contact with a stimulus
- makes daily life more difficult
Endurance ( behavioural characteristic )
when a person chooses to be in presence of the stimulus
a person with arachnophobia will stay in a room with a spider and keep watch of it

Anxiety
Fear
Unreasonable emotional response

phobias are classed as anxiety disorders
the phobias involve an emotional response of anxiety - high arousal
prevents a person from relaxing and having positive thoughts
Fear ( emotional characteristic )
the immediate and unpleasant response when encountering a stimulant
more severe but shorter lasting than anxiety
Unreasonable emotional response ( emotional characteristic )
anxiety or fear is much more disproportionate than normal peoples reactions - providing over the top reactions

if a person sees a stimulus, it is difficult to take attention away from it - allows quick reactions but is irrational for majority of phobias
irrational behaviour ( cognitive characteristic )
a person with a phobia may have extreme thoughts in relation to the stimuli
social phobias such as needing to sound intelligent may place pressure on individuals to perform in social situations
cognitive distortions
people with a phobia may have inaccurate or unrealistic perceptions - seeing snakes as aggressive and alien-looking
