Physics - Materials and Density Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a linear relationship between two quantities?
When the line of best fit is straight
What is a non-linear relationship between two qualities?
When the line of best fit is not straight
What does a relationship between directly proportional quantities look like?
A straight line through the origin
What is spring constant?
The amount of force needed to stretch or compress an object by 1m
What is the unit of spring constant?
N/m
What is Hooke’s law?
The extension of a material is directly proportional to the force applied up to the limit of proportionality
On a force extension graph where can you see the limit of proportionality?
Where the line curves
What is elastic deformation?
- An object stretched or compressed will return to its original length when the force is removed
- Up to the limit of proportionality
What is inelastic deformation?
- When an object is stretched or compressed it won’t return to its original shape when the force is removed
- Past the limit of proportionality
- Permanent deformation
What is uncertainty?
A range in which we expect the real value to lie
What are the properties of a solid?
- Definite shape
- Doesn’t flow
- Can’t really be compressed
- Expand a little bit if heated
What are properties of liquids?
- No definite shape
- Can flow to take shape of container
- Very difficult to compress
What are properties of gases?
- No fixed shape
- Gases diffuse to fill container
- Gases are easily compressed
