What is a FLOWCHART?
It is a GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION of the sequence of ACTIVITIES used to CREATE, PRODUCE, or PROVIDE a SPECIFIC, UNIQUE OUTPUT.
- Why use a FLOWCHART?
a. To “drill down” within a subset, to show the “ground truth” reality of what actually happens.
b. To distinguish between VALUE CREATING and NON VALUE CREATING activities.
c. To make types of WASTE in the NON VALUE CREATING ACTIVITY visible, such as Delays, Storage, Batching, Movement, Inspection, Approval, Rework, etc.
- What is the FLOWCHART SYMBOL for “OPERATION”?
a RECTANGLE, long side at bottom.
- What is the symbol for “INSPECTION”?
a CIRCLE
- What is the symbol for “DELAY”?
a “CAPITAL D”, or 1/2 of an elongated pill, with the arc on the RHS.
- What is the symbol for “STORE” or “STORAGE”?
Upside down TRIANGLE, with a horizontal line making a very small triangle inside the triangle, at the bottom point.
- What is the symbol for “DECIDE”?
a RHOMBUS or SQUARE STANDING ON ONE CORNER. Decision arrows come out of the corners, which must have the decision (Yes, No, Maybe)
- What is the symbol for “MOVE” or “MOVEMENT”?
an ARROW.
