What does VHF direction finding (VDF) provide?
Provides means of determining the aircraft bearing from the ground station.
Bearings are obtained by aircraft transmitting on VHF frequency, how can the controller know what bearing the aircraft needs to be on?
By the ground equipment (screen in front of the controller) displays the bearing of the aircraft from the ground station.
What can effect the accuracy of direction finding?
Name five.
-Propagation error
-Site error
-aircraft attitude (pitch or bank)
-Overhead ground station
-Fading due to multi path signals
The ground stations is normally the airfield, do all airfields provide VDF as a service?
No.
What are the four types of bearing that can be given?
QDM, QDR, QUJ, QTE and QGH.
What is QDM?
Magnetic heading to the station, normally used for homing to a station.
What is QDR?
Magnetic heading from the station.
What is QUJ?
True bearing to the station.
What is QTE?
True bearing from the station, used as a position fix from a ground station.
What is QGH?
The controller advices headings and heights based on their transmission so the controller can direct the aircraft for an approach to land.
What are the four bearing classifications and their accuracy’s?
Class A = +/- 2 degrees
Class B = +/- 5 degrees
Class C = +/- 10 degrees
Class D = > 10 degrees
What should be assumed if no bearing classification is given?
Assume Class B.
What is required for position determination?
Two different ground based stations.
What is an example of requesting directional finding using true bearing?
“True bearing, True bearing Clacton approach G-BORK request true bearing G-BORK.”
“G-BORK Clacton approach true bearing 040 degrees class Bravo”
“True bearing 040 degrees class Bravo, G-BORK.”
Provide an example for requesting QDM?
“Clacton approach G-BORK request QDM G-BORK”
“G-BORK Clacton approach QDM 150 degrees Class C”
“QDM 150 degrees class C G-BORK”
What is transmit for DF determination?
The controller may ask the pilot for a longer transmission for direction finding (DF) determination.
Give an example of a requested transmit for DF determination.
“G-BORK Clacton approach, transmit for DF”
“Transmit for DF, G-BORK”
