Protist,Plant,Fungi Flashcards
(23 cards)
Protist
An organism that belongs to the kingdom Protist
Heterotroph
An organism that gets food by eating other organisms or their byproducts and that cannot make organic compounds from inorganic materials
Eukaryote
It means they have no nucleus
Decomposer
It is an organism that feeds mostly on dead things
Parasite
an organism that lives in or on an organism of another species its host and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other’s expense.
Host
an animal or plant on or in which a parasite or commensal organism lives.
Fungi
A fungus is any member of the group of Eukaryota organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds
Spore
a rounded resistant form adopted by a bacterial cell in adverse conditions.
Lichen
a simple slow-growing plant that typically forms a low crusty, leaf like, or branching growth on rocks, walls, and trees.
Non-vascular plant
Non-vascular plants are plants without a vascular system consisting of xylem and phloem.
Vascular plant
a plant that is characterized by the presence of conducting tissue.
Gymnosperm
a plant that has seeds unprotected by an ovary or fruit. Gymnosperms include the conifers, cycads, and ginkgo.
Angiosperm
a plant that has flowers and produces seeds enclosed within a carpel. The angiosperms are a large group and include herbaceous plants, shrubs, grasses, and most trees.
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy
Cellular respiration
Cellular respiration is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy
Transpiration
Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts, such as leaves, stems and flowers.
Tropism
the turning of all or part of an organism in a particular direction in response to an external stimulus.
Gravitropism
Gravitropism is a coordinated process of differential growth by a plant or fungus in response to gravity pulling on it.
Phototropism
the orientation of a plant or other organism in response to light, either toward the source of light
Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism
Toxoplasmosis
A disease that results from infection with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite.
Malaria
A disease caused by a plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
Giardia
An intestinal infection caused by a giardia parasite.
