Rock and mineral Flashcards
(18 cards)
Mineral
A naturally formed inorganic that has a definite crystal line structure
Rock
A naturally occuring solid mixtureof one or more minerals or organic matter
Element
A substance that cannot seperated or broken into simpler substances by chemical means
Compound
A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Crystal
A solid whos atoms ions or molicules are arranged in a definite pattern
Color
Usually first charactistic noticed about a mineral but generally not reliable
Luster
The way a mineral reflects light
Streak
The color of the powder of a mineral
Cleavage
Th splitting of a mineral along smooth flat surfaces
Fracture
The manner in which a mineral breaks along either curved or irregular surfaces
Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance
Ore
A natural material whose concentration of economically valuable materials is high enough for the material to be mined profitably
Metallic Minerals
they are shiny surfaces that light cannot pass through and good conductors for heat and electricity
Non-Metallic Minerals
Shiny or dull surfaces that let light pass through them and are good incelators for electricity
Gemstones
They are expensive for their rarity and color rather than there usefulness
Sedmintery Rock
Fromed by the coolind and forming of magma
Igneous Rock
Its fromed from volcanic material
Metamorphic Rocks
They are a transformation from existing rocks
