4 reasons for the 13th Amendment?

A

1) Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery throughout the United States, so the aboltionists campaigned for a constitutional amendment to end slavery.
2) Lincoln worried that the Emancipation Proclamation wouldn’t be legitimate in times of peace.
3) Republicans felt that slavery had caused terrible conflict and might do so again if it returned to normality.
4) Northerners recognised former enslaved people’s effort to their war victory.

Why did reconstruction end?
- Northerns were tired of dealing with southern race issues and wanted to focus more on the north. - The economic crash in 1973 led to the Republicans being blamed and a call for working together - Grant wasn't in favour of helping black Americans and in his 1872 Amnesty Act restored 150,000 former Confederates - Rutherford Hayes withdrew all federal troops from the South after the controversy of his election win in 1877.
