Teachings on equality

1. Biblical quote from Galatians
2. Stewardship
3. Agape
4. Good samaritan
5. Golden rule

Galatians quote

'There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male or female, for you are all one in Christ'- Galatians 3:28

Everything should be treated with respect
Everything/everyone is God given so should be treated with compassion and equality
God made us stewards of the earth to look after it and each other

Agape love

Unconditional love- treat EVERYONE equally and with respect despite their appearance or sexuality etc.
Jesus was a model of agape and loved everyone

Good samaritan

Treat people fairly despite what other people are doing and always do the right thing in situations
Even you have your differences (Jews and Samaritans didn't get along), help each
'Love your neighbour'

Golden Rule

'Treat others as you would like to be treated'

Examples of sexism in our society

1. Male terms used
2. Men outnumber women 4:1 in Westminster
3. In UK, women represent 5% of magazine editors (there is one) even though there are roughly the same amount of mean and women
4. Women get 10% of the worlds income and 2%of the world's property
5. Women are expected to be domestic and look after children so can not advance in careers as much as men

Ordination in RCC

No women to be ordained

Ordination in C of E

Women priests and bishops, first priest in 1994

Ordination in Quakers

No ordained clergy- anyone can lead a service

Genesis quote

'Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken from the man, and he brought her to the man'

Women is from man, lesser than him
Eve lead Adam to evil
Conservative Christians follow this, no one else
They believe a woman belongs to a man

Eve's punishment quote

'Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you'

Eve's punishment

Women are ruled over by men
They are sexual objects for child bearing
This is only taught by Conservative Christians

Exodus quote

'You shall not covet your neighbours house. You shall not covet your neighbours wife... or anything that belongs to your neighbour'

Women are mens property
Only Conservative Christians teach this

Teaching from Paul quote

'A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent... but women will be saved through childbearing'

Teaching from Paul

Impacted RCC because it says women can't teach, hence they feel it is against God's will to ordain women

Paul's letter to Galatians quote

'You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus... you are all one in Christ'

Paul's letter to Galatians

Quaker teaching
Paul is saying everyone is one in Christ which insinuates that equality is right

Jesus talking to woman quote

"The Samaritan woman said to him 'you are a Jew and I am a samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink"

Jesus talking to woman

Although Jews and Samaritans did not get along, Jesus still spoke with this woman
This shows his agape love
Jesus teaches to act with equality despite society's judgements and wrongdoings

Luke 8 (Disciples) quote

'All the disciples were male but... these women were helping to support them out of their own means'

Luke 8 (Disciples)

Although all the disciples were men, when spoken of in the Bible, women were always around but they were not mentioned as disciples
They are seen in this text helping the men 'out of their own means'

Resurrection quote

'The women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb... they did not find the body of Lord Jesus'

Resurrection significance

The resurrection is possibly the most important text in the Bible and women were the first witnesses to it
Suggests they are more important then the disciples as they believed it however disciples were doubtful

Catechism & Madonna quote

Virgin Mary is an ideal woman and is highly respected (by men as well as women)
'Each of the two sexes in an image of the power and tenderness of God, with equal dignity though in a different way'

Catechism & Madonna

Virgin Mary is a significant figure and is a symbol of perfection in Christianity. Her motherhood is not a flaw, but a gift.
With the quote this shows that women are not seen upon as less then men, they are different and are blessed with different gifts
Catechism recognises the importance of women
