What is the oviduct?
The fallopian tube
What is a corpus hamorrhagicum?
A temporary structure in the ovary after ovulation
What is the corpus luteum?
The yellow coloured (in some animals) structure formed after follicle rupture that releases progesterone for pregnancy
What is the corpus albicans?
The white scar like structure that forms after the breakdown of the corpus luteum
How does ovulation occur?
The primary follicle matures and expands until it becomes a dominant follicle and ruptures from the surface of the ovary
What is the order of the stages of oestrous cycle?
- Estrus
- Ovulation
- Metestrus
- Diestrus
- Proestrus
What occurs during proeostrus?
The follicle is growing
What occurs during estrus?
Large follicles are present and estrogen levels peak
What occurs during metestrus?
The corpus luteum is starting to form
What occurs during diestrus?
The corpus luteum mis fully formed and progesterone levels peak
What are oogonia?
Immature female reproductive cells
What is meiotic arrest and how long does it last for?
The stopping of meiosis of oogenesites before they fully divide until puberty
What is the infundibulum in female reproduction?
Flared funnel like end of the fallopian tube closest to the ovary containing finger like projections called fimbriae
What is the ampulla in female reproduction?
The widest and longest part of the fallopian tube where fertilisation most commonly occurs
What is the isthmus in female reproduction?
The narrow section that connects the uterine body to the cervix
What is a duplex uterus?
One with two cervices
What is a bicornuate uterus?
One with either poorly or highly developed uterine horns
What is simplex uterus?
One without horns
What are caruncles?
- Specialised raised areas of ruminant endometrium that serve as serve as attachment points for the foetal placenta
What are placental scars?
Not true scars but instead marks that will fade with time of where the placenta was attached
What is the role of the cervix?
- Stops foreign body entry
- Selects for higher quality more motile sperm
- Isolates the uterus during pregnancy
What is the structure of the cervix in cows, ewes and sows?
Spiral shaped with interlocking prominences
What is the structure of the cervix in mares?
Folds of mucosa protruding into vagina
What is the structure of the cervix in bitches and queens?
They lack any complex structures
