Flashcards in Research Method: Data analysis Deck (17):
What are the three types of measure of central tendency?
What are the two measures of dispersion?
What is a measure of dispersion?
it informs us how spread out a set of scores are.
Define standard deviation.
a measure of the variation in a set of scores.
What is the advantage of working out the mode?
helps to indicate a 'usual' figure
What is the disadvantage of a mode?
It is unrepresentative a sit doesn't take into account all the scores.
What it the advantage of working out the median?
it is unaffected by extreme values
What is a disadvantage of the median?
with lots of scores it can be very time consuming.
What is an advantage of working out the mean?
it is very representative as it uses every score.
What is a disadvantage of the mean?
the mean number may not match any of the values in the actual data set.
What is an advantage of the range?
easy to caculate
What is a disadvantage of the range?
can be affected by extreme values
What is an advantage of standard deviation?
each score is taken into account
What is a disadvantage of standard deviation?
complicated to work out
What is an advantage of bar charts?
you can visually compare the difference of the IV
What is a positive skew?
this is where most of the distribution in concentrated towards the left of the graph, resulting in a long tail on the right.
