What is the difference between a tracheobronchial lavage/wash and a bronchoalveolar lavage? When might a tracheobronchial lavage be preferred?
Tracheobronchial = Assesses upper airway exudate and cellular population
Bronchoalveolar - Lower airway.
Tracheobronchial preferred for Rhodococcus in in horses and Bordetella in dogs
What are two methods for tracheobronchial lavage?
Catheter passed via mouth or transtracheal approach.
Describe a tracheal pouch.
Uses a surgically isolated segment of the trachea with an intact nerve and blood supply. First described in dog, also in ferret.
What are the two types of tracheostomies?
Permanent stoma into which a removal tracheostomy tube is inserted - Requires daily management
Permanent tracheostomy where mucosa is showed to skin - Maintenance free
What volume of liquid is introduced via bronchoalveolar lavage?
50-300 mL in dogs and swine. Adult human volumes may be 10-300 mL
