Q

Steps for suctioning (11)

A
  • Perform hand hygiene
  • Explain procedure
  • Put on required PPE
  • Place client in semi/high fowler’s
  • Take baseline vitals/lung sounds
  • Use medical asepsis for oral suctioning
  • Use surgical asepsis for all other types
  • Hyperoxygenate patient
  • Suction for 10-15 seconds with a rotating motion 2-3 times
  • Wait 20-30 seconds between each suction
  • Document amount, color, consistency of secretions and patient response
18
Q

Tracheostomy care steps (6)

A
  • Explain procedure
  • Place patient in semi/high fowler’s
  • Keep 2 extra tracheostomy tubes at bedside, one that is the patient’s size and one that is smaller
  • Suction patient as needed, not on routine schedule
  • Assess for respiratory distress
  • Provide care every 8 hours and as needed
