Flashcards in Respiratory Distress In Newborn Deck (17):
1

RDS?

RR >60
Increase work of breathing
noisy breathing: grun: strider, wheeze
Central cyanosis

2

Causes of RDS?

#1 Sepsis/pneumonia: #1 - most dangerous
#2 Wet Lung/TTN- #2 -most common

3

TTN?

Transient tachypnoea of the newborn

4

Cause of TTN?

Continued production of delayed removal of fetal lung liquid, will get better on own, but will have supportive Rx.

5

MAS?

Meconium aspiration syndrome

6

Why MAS bad?

Chemical pneumonitis
Infection on top of it.

7

Why diaphragmatic hernia, so unwell?

Underdeveloped lungs, severe pulmonary hypertension

8

Clues to neonatal sepsis?

Mother sick? Chorioamnionitis?
Spontaneous labour

9

Most common causes of preterm distress?

1. Sepsis
2. RDS/hyaline membrane disease

10

RDS cause?

Lack of surfactant in lung

11

Secondary RDS?

MAS, inactivated

12

Surfactant production started/caused by?

Cortisol surge in 34-35 weeks

13

Where is surfactant created?

Type 2 pneumocytes

14

RDS

DM2 mothers
Males
Second twin
FHx

15

Surfactants prevent?

prevent long term Chronic lung disease
Caffeine to reduce BPD

16

Target O2 in preterm? Too little vs. Too much?

91-95%
Survival vs. Retinopathy of prematurity

17

How to give surfactant?

Directly through intubation
