Respiratory System Flashcards
(36 cards)
The respiratory system is responsible for
supplying the body with oxygen
disposing of carbon dioxide
what is the transporting fluid that transports gasses through the lungs?
blood
if either system fails body cells begin to die from?
oxygen starvation
accumulation of carbon dioxide
terminal air sacs are called
alveoli
what’s the only visible part of the respiratory system
nose
external nares are
nostrils
the interior of the nose consists of
nasal cavity divided by a midline nasal septum
what are the olfactory receptors?
sense of smell
where are the olfactory receptors located?
in the mucosa in the slit
- superior part of the nasal cavity beneath the ethmoid bone
the nasal mucosa creates a current that moves contaminated Mucous where?
posteriorly toward the throat (pharynx)
and swallowed and digested by the stomach juices
what is the nose palette?
partition which separates the nasal cavity from the oral cavity below
hard palette is
anteriorly
soft palette is
unsupported portion to the posterior
what is the pharynx?
a muscular passageway about 5 inches long
pharynx synonym
throat
what does the pharynx do?
serves as a common passageway for food and airways
-it is continuous with the nasal cavity anteriorly via the internal nares
pharynx process
- air enters the superior portion of the nasal pharynx
- descends through the oropharynx and laryngopharynx to enter the larynx below
- lying posteriorly food enters the esophagus
- clusters of lymphatic tissue called tonsils are found in the pharynx
what is the larynx?
the voice box
-routes air and food into the proper channels
-plays a role in speech
-
where is larynx located?
inferior to the pharynx
what is the epiglottis formed by?
8 rigid Hyaline Cartilages and a spoon shaped flap of elastic cartilage
what is the shield shaped thyroid cartilage and is the largest Hyaline Cartilage
Adams apple
what triggers a cough?
if anything other than air enters the larynx
what are vocal folds?
part of the mucous membrane of the larynx
what is the trachea lined with?
ciliated mucosa that beat continuously
- directed opposite to that of the incoming air
