respiratory system Flashcards
(27 cards)
how many lobes does the right lung have?
3, superior, middle, inferior
how many fissures does the right lung have?
2, oblique and horizontal
how many lobes does the left lung have?
2 superior and inferior
how many fissures does the left lung have?
oblique
which pleura covers the lungs?
visceral
what pleura covers the chest wall?
parietal
what 4 things make up the upper respiratory tract?
nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, pharynx, larynx
what 4 things make up the lower respiratory tract?
trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli
what is the function of the conducting zone?
filters, warms and moistens the air
transmits air to and from the lung
what are the functions of the nasal cavity?
warms and cleanses the air
detects odour
resonating chamber that modifies the voice
what does the pharynx do?
passageway for air and mucus
resonating chamber
where is the pharynx?
extends from nose to larynx
where is the larynx?
connects laryngopharynx
what does the larynx do?
maintains open airway, switching mechanism, voice box (changes tension in voice box)
what is pulmonary ventilation?
exchange of air between the atmosphere and the alveoli of the lungs
what muscles are used in quiet inspiration and in what %?
diaphragm 80%, external intercostals 20%
what muscles are used in forced inspiration?
scalene, sternocleidomastoid, pectoralis minor and major
what muscles are used in forced expiration?
internal intercostals, oblique and rectus abdominis
what is intrapleural pressure?
pressure inside the lung, always lower than intrapulmonary pressure to stop lung form collapsing
what happens during inspiration in relation to volume and pressure?
thoracic volume increases, intrapulmonary volume increases, intrapulmonary pressure decreases
what is pulmonary compliance?
ease in which the lungs can be expanded
what decreases the pulmonary compliance?
scar tissue in lungs
blockages
lower levels of surfactant
what are 2 pulmonary functions test?
peak flow meter, spirometer
what is henrys law?
the amount of gas that dissolves in water is determined by its solubility in water and partial pressure in air
