what does the bladder do?
reservoir for urine

250-300ml, 500ml if painful!
what are the functions of the kidney?
acid base balance, production of hormones and enzymes plus activation of VIT D
what is the order of the parts that make up the nephron?
glomerulus, proximal tubule, descending then ascending loop of henle, distal tubule, collecting duct
what is glomerular filtration?
filtration of a protein free plasma from the glomerulus to the bowman capsule
what is the GFR rate for females?
115 mil/min
what is the GFR rate for males?
125mil/min
what does the proximal convoluted tubule do?
reabsorbs sodium, glucose, amino acids and water
what does the loop of henle do?
reabsorbed sodium and water
what does aldosterone do?
sodium reabsorption and k excretion in distal convoluted tubule and collecting ducts
what does arial natruetic peptide hormone do?
sodium excretion
what does ADH do?
increase in water reabsorption in collecting duct
why does urine appear colourless?
urochrome from breakdown of RBCs
what is the chemical composition of urine?
95% water and 5% solutes
what does erythropoietin do?
stimulates the production of red blood cells
