Rio de Janerio - management strategies and impact of housing Flashcards

Q

Bulldozing

A

Used to eradicate the favelas by forcing eviction and bulldozing parts of the favela and relocating residents to estates built on the periphery of the city.
This isn’t effective as despite resettling 28% of the favela population in 1975, more favelas kept popping up.

Q

Self help schemes

A

The government either subsiding or fully meeting the costs of providing training and basic building materials for the residents to build and improve their homes. Materials provided are like bricks, breeze blocks, cement.
Effective: as money is saved on labour as the residents improve their home, helps build a sense of community.
Ineffective: resident priorities earning an income before improving their dwelling so many didnt improve.

Q

Legalising Ownership of Land

A

This involved favela residents being granted legal ownership and tenure of the land on which their houses where built.
This is effective as residents were far more likely to maintain and invest their own money into improving their home because they now had security and didn’t live with fear of eviction.

Q

Pacification

A

Involves sending in Pacifying Police Units to remove drug traffickers and criminals. This is effective has crime rates are reduced in pacified areas with less murders, gunfights and robberies.
With some of the favelas being made safer it has increased the amount of favela tourism. Which provides an income for residents who can get jobs as favela tour guides.
This isn’t effective as only a small number of favelas have been pacified and it will be costly to continue pacifying the hundreds of favela across Rio.

Q

Cable Cars (e.g. Complexo de Alemao)

A

Cable Cars have been installed in some favelas, this lets residents get from one end of the favela to the other in 16 minutes (2 hours if you walk). Favelados get a free return each day and the cable car connects to Rio’s rail network. This is effective as it opens more opportunities of better paid work in the city than is locally available.
