Australian guide to healthy eating
A food selection tool incorporated into the Australian Dietary Guidelines. It
is intended to be used by consumers to assist them in planning, selecting and consuming adequate proportions of
foods from the five food groups. The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating is a visual tool that reflects the recommended dietary advice detailed in Australian Dietary Guidelines 2 and 3.
Guidline 1
To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs.
Australian dietary guidelines (what they are?)
Offers current recommendations on the types and quantities of foods Australians should consume to maintain optimal health and wellbeing.
Australian dietary guidelines (Why they were developed?)
The Australian population has experienced an increase in
diet-related conditions and diseases, and the guidelines are designed
to address the causes of the increase. Eating too many energy-dense
processed foods and not enough fruit and vegetables are two
examples of trends that are addressed by the guidelines.
How they can promote healthy eating (ADG)
develop healthy dietary patterns that will promote health and
wellbeing in the community
reduce the risk of developing a range of diet-related conditions such as
hypertension (high blood pressure) and impaired glucose regulation
reduce the risk of developing chronic conditions such as type 2
diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.

Guidline 2
Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from the following five groups every day and drink plenty of water.
Guidline 1 focus
Relates to energy balance and encourages individuals to only
consume the amount of energy they require for their specific energy needs.
When people consume too much energy for their needs, the risk of obesity increases and associated
conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some
cancers.
Guidline 2 focus
Guideline 2 provides advice relating
to the consumption of the five food
groups and water.
Guidline 1 on people
Children and adolescents should eat sufficient nutritious foods to grow and develop normally. They should be physically active every day and
their growth should be checked regularly.
Older people should eat nutritious foods and keep physically active to help maintain muscle strength and a healthy weight.
