Science: Atoms Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
What is a molecule?
Composed of 2 or more atoms chemically combined.
What is a compound?
Consists of 2 or more elements chemically combined.
What is a mixture?
Consists of 2 or more substances mingled together, but not chemically combined.
What is the charge of neutrons?
Have no charge.
What is the charge of electrons?
Have a negative charge.
What is the charge of protons?
Have a positive charge.
What are atoms?
The smallest particles making up elements. Atoms consist of three types of particles. Mass is measured in a.m.u. (Atomic Mass Unit).
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element, with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
What is chemical bonding?
Elements combine to form compounds. The forces of attraction which hold the atoms together are known as chemical bonds.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons.
How do you find the number of neutrons?
The mass number minus the number of protons.
What is the Bohr model of an atom?
1st shell; 2, 2nd shell; 8, 3rd shell; 8.
Where do electrons orbit?
In shells.
Where are neutrons located?
In the nucleus.
Where are protons located?
In the nucleus.
