16
Q

What is an Enzyme?

A

A chemical (made of protein) produced by the body that speeds up chemical reactions in the body without the enzyme being used up.

17
Q

What do Salivary glands do?

A

They produce saliva, which helps to soften and moisten the food, and contains amylase.

18
Q

What does Amylase do?

A

Breaks down starch and turns it into a sugar called maltose.

19
Q

What is the function of the Oesophagus?

A

Forces down food from mouth to stomach (by peristalsis).

20
Q

What is the function of the Stomach?

A

Organ for physical digestion, chemical digestion, kills bacteria, and softens food.

21
Q

What is the Small Intestine?

A

Chemical digestion and absorption, is about 6m long, the liver and the pancreas help digest the food.

22
Q

What is the Large Intestine?

A

Is 1.5m long, reabsorbs water, stores waste faeces, and egests faeces.

23
Q

What does the Liver do?

A

Makes bile, which breaks down fat, and is the largest organ.

24
Q

What does the Pancreas do?

A

Makes enzymes.
