science heart vessels and veins etc Flashcards
(28 cards)
the functions of the blood are
transport
defence against disease
Homeostasis - Keep body temperature constant
plasma
Liquid part of blood, transports substance and heat
aorta
Aorta – Largest blood vessel – Transports oxygenated blood away form the heart to the body. –
major artery in the heart. branches out into a series of smaller arteries that deliver oxygenated blood and dissolved nutrients to all cells of the body
rbc (red blood cells)
transport oxygen (haemoglobin)
wbc (white blood cells)
produce antibodies to fight disease
platelets
clot the blood
Bicuspid Valve –
Opens to allow deoxygenated blood to enter the left ventricle from the right ventricle. It has two flaps.
veins
carry blood into the heart
have thinner walls than arteries. blood pressure in veins is lower than in arteries so veins also have valves to prevent the backflow of blood.
vena cava
Vena Cava – Transports carbon dioxide- rich (deoxygenated) blood from the body to the heart.
pulmonary vein
The vessel that brings
oxygenated blood from the
lungs to the heart to be
pumped around the body
arteries
carry blood away from the heart
have thick walls to withstand the high pressure of blood pumped out of the heart
oxygen-rich blood
right ventricle
Chamber of the
heart that pumps
blood to the lungs
pulmonary artery
Pulmonary Artery – Transports deoxygenated blood away from the heart to the lungs.
left ventricle
Chamber of the
heart that pumps
blood all around the
body
capillaries
tiny blood vessels that link arteries and veins. there is a huge network of capillaries throughout the body.
walls are very thin so molecules can easily pass in and out of surrounding cells. the molecules exchanged include oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose, waste and hormones
right atrium
Chamber of the heart
that the vena cava
brings deoxygenated
blood to
semi-lunar valves
Open to allow blood to leave the heart from the ventricles. found inside your heart, stop blood flowing back into your heart
septum
separates the left and right side of the heart. prevents blood from mixing in the heart.
four chambers of the heart
two atria two ventricles. the ventricles are larger than the atria.
valves
valves are flaps of tissue which prevents blood from flowing backwards
plasma
The liquid part
of blood
left atrium
Chamber of the heart
that the pulmonary
vein brings
oxygenated blood to
circulatory system
Transports nutrients,
gases and hormones
to cells and removes
waste products
cardiac muscle
Muscle which makes
up the heart - which
does not tire
