What is a Petracan Sonnet?
A sonnet with a story level that speaks stereotypically of women and a discourse level consisting of an octet followed by a sestet with a volta in the middle. Rhyme scheme: abba abba cdc dcd.
What is a Shakespearan (English) Sonnet?
A sonnet characterized by realism and flaws in women, with a discourse level of three quartets and a volta in the last couplet. Rhyme scheme: abab cdcd efef gg.

What is a Thesis in poetry?
The main argument or claim about the poem, providing a clear and concise interpretation of its meaning or purpose.
What is an Antithesis?
The juxtaposition of two contrasting ideas, often in parallel grammatical structures, to highlight their difference and emphasize a deeper meaning.
What is a Conclusion in poetry?
Provides a sense of ending and can be achieved through various techniques, leaving the reader with a final image, a thought to ponder, or a shift in perspective.
What is a Volta/Twist?
A rhetorical shift or change in thought, mood, or argument within a poem.
What does ‘Story level’ refer to?
‘Story’ refers to the actual chronology of events in a narrative.
What does ‘Discourse level’ refer to?
Discourse refers to the manipulation of the story in the presentation of the narrative.
What is ‘external form’ in poetry?
The use of stanzas, which are groups of lines divided from other groups by horizontal white space on the page.
What is a Historically fixed form?
Also known as closed-form or traditional forms, they adhere to a predetermined structure with specific rules regarding lines, syllable count, rhyme scheme, meter, and stanza structure.
Examples: sonnet, haiku, villanelle
