Flashcards in side effects only Deck (27):
1

amiodarone: side effects

antiarrhythmic - contains high levels of iodine and may affect thyroid function

2

rx iodine (potassium iodine/SSKI, Lugol's solution): side effects

reduces size and vascularity of thyroid - stains teeth so give in milk or juice with straw

3

thiazides: side effects

retain calcium

4

steroids - ADD

decrease Ca by excreting it through GI tract

5

alcohol: side effects

suppresses ADH and is hypertonic

6

digoxin toxicity

early: anorexia, nausea, vomiting
late: arrhythmias (AV block, PVC), brady, visual disturbances

K+ trouble! hypokalemia + digoxin = toxicity!

7

morphine toxicity

pin point pupils
RR less than 13/min

8

morphine side effects

sedation
hypotension
nausea, vomiting
urinary retention
physical dependence

check pupils & respirations

9

neostigmine nursing considerations

cholinergic agonist (myasthenia gravis)
nausea, vomiting, abd cramps
respiratory depression
bronchoconstriction
hypotension, bradycardia

nursing: monitor vitals, atropine IM available, potentiates morphine

10

anti-psychotics side effects

extrapyramidal
anticholinergic
tardive dyskinesia

MORE

11

acute alcohol withdrawal s/s

lethargy
hangover
agranulocytosis

12

benzodiazepine side effects (VERIFY)

antianxiolytic
drowsiness
ataxia
cardiovascular collapse

13

lithium side effects

dizziness
headache
impaired vision
fine hand tremors
reversible leukocytosis

nursing considerations: monitor blood levels frequently, encourage 2500-3000 mL drink daily

14

akathisia

restlessness, unable to sit still

15

ataxia

loss of muscle control during voluntary movements

16

calcium channel blocker: side effects

lightheadedness
headache
hypotension
hypokalemia

nursing responsibilities: monitor BP, K levels

17

phenytoin (anticonvulsant/antiarrhythmic) side effects

thrombocytopenia
leukopenia
v fib
drowsiness
ataxia
nystagmus
diplopia
gingival hyperplasia
toxic hepatitis
red-brown, pink discoloration

nursing: with meals to minimize gi upset, oral hygiene, never mix with other drugs

18

levothyroxine: patient should report s/s

chest pain
palpitations
sweating
nervousness
shortness of breath

19

levothyroxine: side effects

nervousness
tremors
insomnia
tachycardia
palpitations
dysrhythmias
angina

20

aminoglycoside side effects

ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity

nursing: check hearing, renal function, encourage fluids, offer small frequent meals (suppresses intestinal bacteria)

21

coumadine side effects

hemorrhage
rash
fever
(excessive)

22

coumadine: antidote

vitamin k (phytonadione/Mephyton)

23

MAOI side effects

HAHA

htn/htn crisis
anticholinergic side effects
hepatocellular jaundice
arrhythmia, anorexia

24

neuroleptic malignant syndrome

potentially fatal, may occur at any time during neuroleptic (antipsychotic) med therapy

rare; commonly occurs at initiation - med change, dosage increase, med combo

F ever
E ncephalopathy
V itals unstable
E xtrapyramidal
R igidity of muscles

25

extrapyramidal effects

parkinsonism:
tremors
masklike facies
rigidity, shuffling gait
dysphagia, drooling

26

tardive dyskinesia

protrusion of tongue
chewing motion
involuntary body movements

27

furosemide: ae

push slowly over 1-2 minutes to prevent hypotension and ototoxicity
