Skeletal Flashcards
(42 cards)
Axial skeleton
The part of the skeleton that consists of the bones of the head and trunk of a vertebrate.
Appendicular skeleton
Bones and limbs and limb girdles that are attached to the axial skeleton.
Compact bone
one of the two types of osseous tissue that form bones
Spongy bone
spicules form a latticework, with interstices filled with embryonic connective tissue or bone marrow
Long bones
hard, dense bones that provide strength, structure, and mobility
Short bones
They provide support and stability with little to no movement
Flat bones
Provide either extensive protection or the provision of broad surfaces for muscular attachment
Irregular bones
from their peculiar form, cannot be grouped as long bone, short bone, flat bone or sesamoid bone
Diaphysis
Makes up most of the bones length and is composed of compact bone
Periosteum
A fibrous connective tissue membrane
Epiphyseal line
A thin line of bony issue in adults spanning the epiphysis that looks a bit different from the rest of the bone in that area
Comminuted fracture
a break or splinter of the bone into more than two fragments
Compression fracture
Occurs when one or more bones in the spine weaken and crumple
Depressed fracture
a break in continuity of bone; it may be caused by trauma, twisting due to muscle spasm or indirect loss of leverage
Impacted fracture
ends are driven into each other
Spiral fracture
occurring when torque is applied along the axis of a bone
Greenstick fracture
fracture of the bone, occurring typically in children, in which one side of the bone is broken and the other only bent
Hematoma
solid swelling of clotted blood within the tissues
Cranium
the skull, especially the part enclosing the brain
Occipital bone
a saucer-shaped membrane bone situated at the back and lower part of the skull
Vertebral column
a bony skeletal structure found in vertebrates
Vertebrae
give strength and flexibility to the spinal column
Intervertebral disc
a layer of cartilage separating adjacent vertebrae in the spine
Cervical vertebrae
vertebrae immediately below the skull
