(5 cards)
What is social influence in social psychology?
Social influence refers to how individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are affected by the presence or actions of others.
It includes conformity, obedience, compliance, and minority influence.
What are the three main types of social influence?
The three main types are:
1.Conformity: Changing behavior to match group norms.
2.Compliance: Agreeing to a request from someone with no power over you.
3.Obedience: Following a direct command from an authority figure.
What did Asch’s conformity experiments demonstrate?
Solomon Asch showed that people conform to group norms even when the group is clearly wrong. In his line judgment experiment, 75% of participants conformed at least once.
What did Milgram’s obedience study reveal?
Stanley Milgram found that 65% of participants obeyed an authority figure’s instructions to deliver what they thought were fatal electric shocks, showing the powerful effect of authority on obedience.
What did Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment demonstrate about social roles?
Philip Zimbardo’s study revealed how quickly people internalize social roles. Participants assigned as guards became abusive, while prisoners became passive, suggesting situational forces shape behavior.
