STUDY GUIDE N - UNIT 3 Flashcards
(28 cards)
What joint has the greatest range of motion and is most frequently dislocated?
Glenohumeral joint.
What deepens the glenoid cavity?
Glenoid labrum (fibrocartilage).
What provides most strength to the shoulder joint?
Rotator cuff muscles.
What is the weakest part of the shoulder joint?
Inferior portion—lacks rotator cuff support.
Structural classifications:
- Glenohumeral: Ball-and-socket
- Elbow: Hinge
- Radioulnar: Pivot
- Intercarpal: Plane
- Carpometacarpal (thumb): Saddle
- MCP: Condylar
- IP: Hinge
What are the two articulations of the elbow?
Humeroulnar (hinge), Humeroradial (hinge).
Key ligaments of the elbow?
Ulnar collateral, radial collateral.
What ligament holds the radial head in place?
Anular ligament.
Shape of smooth muscle cells?
Fusiform (spindle-shaped).
Source of Ca²⁺ in smooth muscle?
Mostly from interstitial fluid (not much SR).
Are smooth muscles striated?
No—lack sarcomeres/Z-discs.
Contraction shape of smooth muscle?
Corkscrew twist.
Smooth vs. skeletal muscle contraction?
Smooth = slower, longer, more fatigue-resistant.
Smooth muscle control?
Autonomic nervous system, hormones, stretch (myogenic), local factors.
Single-unit vs. multi-unit smooth muscle?
A. Single-unit: Most common, contracts in unison, has varicosities.
B. Multi-unit: Contracts individually, fine motor control (e.g., eye, arrector pili).
What muscles protract the scapula?
Serratus anterior, pectoralis minor.
What muscle elevates the scapula?
Levator scapulae.
What muscles retract scapula?
Rhomboid major/minor, middle trapezius.
What muscle depresses scapula?
Inferior trapezius.
Actions of pectoralis major?
Flexes, adducts, medially rotates arm.
Actions of latissimus dorsi?
Extends, adducts, medially rotates arm.
Parts of deltoid and actions?
- Anterior: flex/medially rotate
- Middle: abduct
- Posterior: extend/laterally rotate
What do rotator cuff muscles do?
- Stabilize the glenohumeral joint.
- Mnemonic: SITS – Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres minor, Subscapularis.
Anterior arm muscles?
Biceps brachii (also flexes shoulder), brachialis (main flexor), coracobrachialis.
