A
  • Ultra-short-acting depolarizing skeletal muscle relaxant that mimics acetylcholine
  • Binds with cholinergic receptors on motor endplate, producing phase I block manifested by muscle fasciculations

Succinylcholine Contraindications

A
  • Known hypersensitivity
  • Renal failure
  • Para or quadriplegic, muscular dystrophy history or other neuromuscular diseases
  • Stroke with residual muscle dysfunction
  • History of malignant hyperthermia
  • Penetrating ocular injuries due to increased intraocular pressure caused by med
  • Pt sustained multisystem trauma, burns, prolonged immobilization, or limb entrapment resulting in hyperkalemia
  • Known or suspected hyperkalemia
  • Predicted difficult intubation

Succinylcholine Adverse effects

A

• Apnea
• Respiratory depression
• Dysrhythmias,
• Cardiac arrest
• Hyperkalemia (trauma and burn patients)
• Increased intracranial, intraocular and intragastric pressures
• Excessive salivation
• Prolonged muscle rigidity
• Rhabdomyolysis
• Malignant hyperthermia
