How is syphilis most commonly transmitted?
Through direct sexual contact with an infectious lesion.
What are the stages of early syphilis?
Primary, secondary, and early latent syphilis (within 2 years of infection).
What are the stages of late syphilis?
Late latent and tertiary syphilis (more than 2 years after infection).
Can syphilis be cured?
Yes, if treated early with appropriate antibiotics.
What are common symptoms of syphilis?
Painless genital ulcers, mouth ulcers, rash on palms/soles, warty growths, flu-like symptoms, swollen glands, white mouth patches, and patchy hair loss.
What are major complications of syphilis?
Neurosyphilis, cardiovascular syphilis, gummatous syphilis, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and HIV facilitation.
What should be advised regarding sexual activity if syphilis is suspected?
Avoid all sexual contact until diagnosis is excluded or treatment is completed.
What is the first-line treatment for early, asymptomatic or late latent syphilis?
Benzathine benzylpenicillin.
What is an alternative treatment to benzathine benzylpenicillin for syphilis?
Doxycycline.
