Toxins Flashcards
(4 cards)
Puffer Fish Toxin
“Tetrodotoxin”
Binds to voltage gated Na channels in nerve and cardiac tissue, inhibiting NA INFLUX and preventing action potential conduction.
Similar to Saxitoxin from Dinoflagellates in “red tide”
Sx: paresthesias of face and extremities, weakness, dizziness, loss of reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Higher exposures= severe hypotension and general paralysis; death from Respiratory failure and hypotension.
Tx= supportive care and intestinal decontamination with gut lavage and charcoal
Dinoflagellates
“Saxitoxin” in “Red tide”
Binds to voltage gated Na channels, inhibiting NA INFLUX and preventing action potential conduction.
Similar to Tetrodotoxin from puffer fish
Exotic Fish, Morey eel
“Ciguatoxin”
Binds to voltage gated Na Channels, keeping it OPEN and causing persistent DEPOLARIZATION
Similar to Batrachotoxin from South American Frogs
South American frogs
“Batrachotoxin”
Binds to voltage gated Na channel, keeping it OPEN and causing persistent DEPOLARIZATION.
Similar to Ciguatoxin from Exotic fish and Morey eel
