trauma chapter Flashcards

1
Q

define rigid internal fixation

A

any form of fixation applied directly to the bones which is strong enough to prevent interfragmentary motion across the fracture when actively using the skeletal structure

Q

examples of rigid fixation

A
  1. two lag screws or bone plates across a fracture
  2. use of a recon bone plate with at least three screws on each side of the fracture
  3. large compression plate across a fracture

Q

functionally stable fixation
common example?

A

adequate stability to allow function even though there is not adequate stability to allow direct bone union
spectrum
even though SOME interfragmentary motion may permit, the clinical outcomes are great - indicating that absolute immobility of the fragments is unneccssary for satisfactory recovery

single miniplate technique of treating mandibular angle or body fractures
