Luis Walter Álvarez and experimental physics
Álvarez had a long, prolific career in experimental physics. He was involved in a wide range of projects, from researching microwave radar, to participating in the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. He even won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1968 for his work with subatomic particles.
The range of Álvarez’s work was so wide that he even developed the Alvarez hypothesis with his son about the extinction of dinosaurs!
He and his son, Walter, a geologist, published their theory that an asteroid impact on Earth 65 million years ago caused the abrupt extinction of dinosaurs.
